November 6, 2007, Jupiter, FL— Synthetic Turf International (STI), a global synthetic turf supplier and installer of premium synthetic putting greens and related synthetic surfaces, recently completed the installation of a flag football field at the Lester H. White Boys & Girls Club of Broward County’s NFL Youth Education Town (“YET”) Center. STI’s Sports Turf XP was the product of choice for the Club’s collegiate-quality field.
Designed at approximately three-quarters the size of a regulation football field, the project included the removal of over 400 tons of material from the Club’s existing, heavily worn multi-purpose field. Gravel and PVC pipe were utilized to provide adequate drainage prior to the installation of 32,000 square feet of Sports Turf XP—including inlaid end zones created with blue Sports Turf XP. Additionally, STI donated signage for the field and painting of the field’s perimeter wall.
“The kids love this field. They love being outdoors playing on the field. They feel as if they are in a state of paradise,” stated Brenda Fulmore, Broward County Boys & Girls Club’s Unit Director. “We utilize the field for more than just our flag football program,” she continued. “The kids are allowed access to the field after the homework period. And they are out there, running and jumping. The boys play flag football. The girls lounge around and talk and jump rope. They are safe—without worries. Watching them play after being cooped up inside all day is like watching the transformation of a butterfly.”
Created for use in sporting, field and playground venues, Sports Turf XP meets the Boys & Girls Club’s stringent requirements for durability and playability. The turf’s stabilized polypropylene and urethane backings add dimensional stability and cushioning for enhanced performance and safety. Inherently resilient, Sports Turf XP requires minimal maintenance, thereby allowing maximum usage by the Club’s after school and summer flag football programs.
“We are more than happy with the field,” commented Fulmore. “We have an average of 225 children per day that use our Club. It’s great to have a durable field such as this for them to play on. And STI was great to work with. They knew exactly what we needed and came right in and took over. STI’s staff is focused and hard-working. They got the job done. Now we consider them part of the family!”
Speaking of the project STI President William Campbell stated, “The long-term benefits of utilizing our synthetic turf are immeasurable. Sports Turf XP withstands the heaviest of use. The Club and the children involved in the program will benefit from use of this field for years to come.”
Boys & Girls Clubs of America joined forces with the NFL in 2003 as the managing partner of the NFL Youth Education Town (“YET”) initiative. The NFL’s YET Centers are designed to meet community needs by providing educational assistance, job training, technical education, life-skills development, and recreational outlets. Facilities vary, but include libraries, classrooms, technology labs, and physical fitness centers. The NFL donates more than one million dollars toward the project annually, with other funding coming from local public and private support.
