Synthetic Turf International Creates Ultimate Recreation Retreat
Fort Drum Provides Putting Green and Chipping Station for Troops
Fort Drum, New York
December 18, 2006, Jupiter, FL—Synthetic Turf International (STI), a global synthetic turf supplier and installer of premium synthetic putting greens and related synthetic surfaces, recently completed a putting green and chipping station installation project at Fort Drum. Located in Upstate New York, Fort Drum provides planning and support for the mobilization and training of almost 80,000 U.S. troops annually. STI’s Randolph, New Jersey, distributor, Tee to Green, also participated in the project.
The 6,000 square foot project consisted of installing a 3,500 square foot synthetic putting green constructed of STI’s exclusive NP50® nylon putting surface. STI’s tour-quality synthetic putting green is virtually maintenance-free and provides the look, feel and playability of a natural grass green. An eight-foot border of STI’s NF75 nylon fringe material surrounds the putting green, creating a realistic chipping area on which troops practice their short game.
STI President William Campbell states, “We are pleased to have been given this opportunity to do something to benefit our troops. Fort Drum is the last stop for many of these servicemen and women before deployment overseas. Providing recreation for them is important to not only their physical health, but also their mental health and wellness.” He continues, “Incorporating a putting green into the community landscape provides a form of recreation to be enjoyed by entire families. This togetherness is essential to the troops as they face long-term separations from the families.”
Fort Drum has been used as a military training site since 1908, however, the Army's presence in Upstate New York can be traced back to the early 1800's. Today, Fort Drum consists of 107,265 acres. Its mission includes command of active component units assigned to the installation. The base also provides administrative and logistical support all units stationed at the base including active and reserve units of all branches of military service in training at Fort Drum.
