It is that time of year again, The British Open was founded by pioneering golfers who had one goal in mind and that was to crown the Champion Golfer of the Year.
Since it began in 1860, The Open has been played over some of the world’s most esteemed courses. The British Open has produced an amazing collection of champions. The Open is the oldest and most international championship in professional golf and the Claret Jug – first presented in 1873 – is one of the most iconic trophies in all of sport.
On October 17, 1860, eight professional golfers assembled at Prestwick for a tournament to determine who would be the Champion golfer.
The winner received the Challenge Belt, a prize crafted from red Moroccan leather and worth £25. The participants played three rounds on the then 12-hole links, with Willie Park Sr beating Old Tom Morris by two shots. A year later, Prestwick announced that the tournament “shall be open to all the world.” Which led to the annual Open tournament.
This year The 146th Open is being held at the Royal Birkdale Tee time begins at 6:35 a.m. local time on Thursday July 20th. For more information please visit https://www.theopen.com.
